The journey with money….

 books-for-money

What was your first introduction to money?

Did you collect change, and put it in a piggy bank? Did your parents give you a weekly allowance? Were you the kid at school that sold candy, Pokemon cards, or lemonade? Who taught you the principles of money and wealth?

I can say for myself…..noboody! *Keith Sweat voice*

My journey with money started when I got my first job my junior year of high school. I specifically got a job to pay for prom expenses. I saved up around $800 to pay for everything, and I didn’t have a dime left after spending it all. The first lesson I learned about money was to earn it….Then spend it!

Now this isn’t a bad lesson that I learned. However, this was my first and only lesson that I learned. There’s obviously more to money than just spending it. This one lesson it shaped how I made life decisions. No one told me to save for emergencies and not to over spend. No one showed me how to multiply my money to create wealth. For many of us, no one sat us down and pulled out a “How money works” book. We you subconsciously learned from watching our parents or the people in the environment we were reared in.

Money work, work, work, work, WORKS…..

You do realize that money is supposed to work for you, right? How Chel-Sway? Money works like this…..First, you generate the money through working a job or creating incoming generating assets (a business, investments, real estates, intellectual property, etc.) Once that money comes in, you put it to work by telling it where to go (aka budgeting). Hopefully, that money goes into more assets than into liabilities.

Some of us work FOR money. This is how you can tell if you work for money:

  • You work a job that you don’t love but you work it because you need the money.
  • You are driven by money in an ungodly way.

Now y’all know I have to back this up with the word of God……

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” – Matthew 6:24 This scripture alone is a blog post in itself. I will save it for a another day but  repeat after me “Money works for me. I do not work for money.”

Unlearn……..

As a financial coach, I believe that the basics of building wealth is understanding how money works. We need to unlearn some of what we’ve been taught about money in order for us to truly master it.

One of the ways you can learn is reading financial books. I FINALLY read the book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki, and it truly is an eye-opener. I’ll be sharing the MAJOR keys and biblical principles that I got from reading this book in the next blog post.

What are the lessons you learned about money while growing up? Did you have humble beginnings, were you born into wealth, are you still trying to figure out how to master money, etc? Please share.
